Sounds great -- today was ken tai jo over here... some variations I think you'll like and, here's news:

a new 7th ken tai jo -- the one where uke grabs the end of hte jo and nage applies nikkyo is generally no longer taught! I'll fill you in on my blog tonight! :)

wow. congrats on the set!!! must've been REALLY exivespne. i've been thinking about having an Aria set too, but I don't love the series enough to track them down ^^ (my money's going towards video game figures and Queen's Blade, lol). I wish more figures of the girls would come out though. MF should've made an Akari to go with Alicia >3<

Glad to see you've got the finish and rerseve action in the equation, like it. Something that really helped me with this whipping action was training with a guy on a Goju karate course and he started shaking' so I copied him. We were doing a drill where the techniques were progressively becoming smaller' and faster as a result. The shaking' meant that I had no chance of being able to block' my training partner so I stopped trying as such.Over the weeks I started messing around with this shaking and was surprised to notice the punches flying out on their own almost. This was when I started to get a realisation of throwing the punch. I sometimes get people to shake like a dog' in the mirror, it helps get the rerseve action going. In effect it is the pull back' you mention for the single punch. This really only started me off, it was much later, away from Trad Karate where I learnt how to punch porperly.I'm enjoying these posts, you're doing a good job of explaining a difficult topic, you're not wrong about people struggling with this stuff.

Thank you Sensei. I found this article thourgh an aikido journal daily email newsletter. What a great explanation. I will put this into daily karate practice and be very focused on the wave motion/ hip rotation in my blocks and strikes as you have clearly demonstrated.Ryan

Aikido Quotes

  • O-Sensei: My students think I don't lose my center. That is not so; I simply recognize it sooner and get back faster.

  • Morihiro Saito Sensei: Aikido is generally believed to represent circular movements. Contrary to such belief, however, Aikido, in its true KI form, is a fierce art piercing straight through the center of opposition.

  • Furuya Sensei on Swordsmanship: Letting go of the idea of “sword” and the idea of “action” is the meaning behind “willow in the gentle breeze.” When the slight summer breeze blows, does the willow follow the “nature of the willow,” or does it follow the “nature of the breeze?” Please think about this - in this lies the essence of sword technique.
